Research and planning: Magazine front cover collages

  • I will draw inspiration from the following magazine front covers.
  • Ideas will adhere or subvert the social realism genre
  • The collage includes independent and conglomerate magazines.
  • The conglomerate magazine like "Empire" generates ideas such as the magazine front cover ideas forming around the headlined/ main images film narrative.
  • "Cosmopolis" uses colours that draw on connotations that compliment the headline film/ main images film narrative.
  • "Total Film" use of coverlines typography and layout will be a feature I adhere to/ consider in my own front cover construction.
  •  "Film Maker" main image uses mise-en-scene of a simplistic nature but presents a sense of narrative through connotations of facial expressions and body language.
  • "American cinematographer" uses a conventional independent magazine front cover approach with the use of the focal point being the main image and lack of coverlines. I will adhere to presenting a sense of narrative through mise-en-scene on my magazine front cover but I will subvert conventions by using vast amounts of coverlines.
  • The positioning of coverlines will vary with typography size and positioning as has been done in "SFX" magazine.
  • Most mastheads include a bold typography which helps audience navigation so I have included that feature.
  • Main image manipulation will be used to present a sense of character which has been done in "Go film social magazine" as an example presented on the collage. The idea behind doing so, advertises the film correctly which allows audiences to decide on whether the film appeals to them.
