The winner of the annual Sundance film festival was this entry which can be considered to be a feel- good film. A convention which works in favour of independent studios is to have innovative idea but portray it from the view of the protagonist. The main actors would have little or no experience but to be a winning entry, would need to have portrayed their roles really well. The use of emphasising on characters will create the emotive response that is needed to engage the intended target, most likely niche audience.

Ant-Man:

To follow the story of a Marvel super hero, the trailer displays adherence to conventions. The audience is taken into the world saving scenario with the use of displaying the strengths and weaknesses of the protagonist. For this idea to be enforced, the use of a voice over with multiple voices demonstrates an extract of the films conversations to allow the audience to understand that the protagonist is rising amongst the ranks of an Avenger super hero. The trailer itself follows super hero genre conventions by starting with an equilibrium that advances into a resolution or a questionable resolution which entices the audiences interest. Overall, the trailer stimulates the buzz and to show the protagonist holds the ultimate power, the use of shot types, expansion of time and simple tracking of movement emphasises on the endorsement behind the newly presented super hero. Including the conventional sound motif which creates the intense build of atmosphere.

The Gallows:

 

The Gallows uses the conventional filming technique where perspective of the camera is filmed by the characters using a hand held camera. The technique also compliments the film/ trailers genre due to captivating conventions and raw emotions from the view point of all leading characters. Considering that the characters aim was to destroy the play production that was to be performed, the use of hand held camera technique contributes to the build of the conventions of a play which is the audiences fundamental role. Just by using this technique, the originality of the film compliments the genre whilst not making the trailer a "chore to watch."
