Post-Production: Park scenes raw footage

  • The goal of the scenes is for certain audiences to identify with "Dan's" struggles while others will feel a sense of pathos towards the main character.
  • The idea of the scenes is to catch the sentiment of park and show the one connection the main character has which is with his loyal dog.

  • Footage one:
This take is blurry and the frame would need tightening.
    Footage two:

The second clip does not show the actor taking out the focal prop being the letter. The dog, Jenson, is also distracted.
    Footage three:

This take will be used in the editing process because:

    1. The take is focused so the audience can see the natural setting which is conventionally used in social realism genre to represent class.
    2. The scene uses a wide shot so the frame captures features of mise-en-scene such as glum facial expressions and either interpreted as relaxed or agitated body language expressed through the actor.
    3. The dog actor is attentive and keeps main focus on our actor and on the camera.
    4. The setting of the camera has been made blue to compliment the scenes upset mood/tone.
    5. The actor is working class which means that at times clothing can be branded which has been done in social realism films like "Kidulthood". The brands can also allow audiences to interpret/ generate connotations to certain pychographics.
    6. When editing, the sound will be made quieter so that diegetic/ ambient noises of birds tweeting and the wind noise builds on the soundscape but also adheres to social realism films application of sound.
    Footage four:
This footage will not be used in the editing stage because, when Robert throws the paper, the action itself seems forced rather than an expression of anger displacement.
    Footage five:

In this take Rob forgot to throw the paper.
    Footage Six:
The final take will be used in the editing process because:
    1. The head over the shoulder shot frame is tightly positioned. This has been done so that the shot works as a point of view where the camera is focused on the note focal prop.
    2. The focal prop is readable
    3. The note is crumpled which shows he has had the note for a certain duration.
    4. The note perfectly stops at the bottom step, still in shot and allows the use of body language to show anger displacement. Within the scene, there is a focal diegetic sound of the noise he makes when his foot contacts the paper.
    5. The scene here becomes slightly out of focus which compliments the actors mood.
    6. The blue tint on the frame compliments the scene and the idea of the trailer being a first person narrative as the main characters inner emotions is expressed through a sense of pathetic fallacy based on the tone created.
    7. Robert exists from the frame which remains audience focus for an instant on the paper that remains.
    8. When editing, the diegetic sound e.g the wind will be decreased so that the voice over of the main characters inner thoughts are heard.
    Footage seven:
    Footage eight:
    • Footage eight will be used within the trailer as the dog, Jenson is able to keep up with Robert.
    • To keep diegetic noise, there will be a hint of wind kept in the scene but so that voice over can be heard, the sound of the clip will be decreased.
    Footage nine:
    Footage eleven:
    Footage twelve:
    • The final three footages where taken to replace the alleyway scene. Due to time constraints, as a group we decided to apply the same idea of the alleyway scene but in a different location
    • We shot this scene in Hyde Parks forest area which compliments the pathetic fallacy glum atmosphere.
    • The displacement of anger is shown through a wide shot, focusing on the body language to express said anger.
    • The camera is intentionally slightly out of focus so that Dan's frustration perspective is complimented.
    • The diegetic sound of the bottle hitting the camera lens will be picked up and possibly intensified.
    • The camera shakes slightly when contacted by the bottle which connotations display Dan's aggressive output.

Post-Production: Possible film poster main image (1/3)

    •  For my film poster print, I have considered various aspects of mise-en-scene and cinematography:
    1. The first aspect I have considered was setting. The scene that I want to advertise captures the band stand scene. The setting shows a natural setting which adheres to the social realism genre working class setting aspect.
    2. Considering cinematography, I have taken a wide shot photograph using a DSLR camera. The shot type will allow me too add other print poster features on the background.
    3. I have considered body language that has relaxed characteristics to show his comfort within the scene that is a place he and his father shared.
    4. Props used: note from father
    5. To show the character Dan has a friend, Robert brought along his pet dog who stared in a few scenes.
    6. Clothing: he is wearing casual clothing which compliments the social realism genre as he comes from a working class background.
    7. Facial expression: I wasn't sure if I wanted to have my actor portraying emotions of upset or happiness so I have taken photographs of both. The reason I still have not decided is that in the trailer, the character Dan is mainly upset but within this scene he experiences happiness, sadness and anger which represent his conflict confusion off how to react to reading his fathers letter.
    8. I may be manipulating the image, using photoshop software, to blur out the background which draws attention to the main character.
    9. The problem with certain photographs is that certain images are pixalated and out of focus so they would not be able to be used for my poster print.

    • I have considered mise-en-scene and cinematography:
    1. I have taken a photograph using an extreme wide shot so that I will be able to add poster print features onto my main image.
    2. Adhering to social realism genre, I have used a conventional independent scene area to use as my setting which represents social class of my main character being a working class background.
    3. I have included adding Roberts pet dog Jenson to show that he has a companion that he is comfortable with which presents a sense of character within poster print advertisement.
    4. I have considered facial expressions where the actor Robert wears a brooding facial expression to show his glum nature which reflects his attitude within the film trailer.

Research and Planning: Intricate/ informative details for the magazine front cover

    • The aim of my research is to identify informative features of a magazine which is often known as the pug features such as:
    1. Price
    2. Issue Number
    3. URL/ website link
    4. Barcode
    5. The issues date release
    • I have also considered that I need to identify the position of these features to see if I will adhere or subvert the conventional format of some mainstream and some independent film magazine products.
    • I have used prezi software to document my findings.

    Post-Production: Film review/ award gif

    • I have created a wreath film review and turned it into a gif.
    • I have also learnt how to use the conventional use of language to advertise the film reviews from prestigious independent institutions.
    • I have also conventionally used bold typography to make the film review stand out on the print which will help the films appeal.
    • I will be creating another two because conventionally, social realism print posters use 3 to advertise.

    Post-Production: Magazine background progress 5

    • Unfortunately, granger games had there window smashed. I noticed how the window was smashed so I asked a shop workers permission to take an image of the authentic crack. The reason I asked was that the previous magazine front covers background was an image from the internet. After finding out the internet image wouldn't pass, I decided to think of using another magazine background. Instead, the unfortunate event gave me the opportunity to take a photo of the crack and use if for my magazine front cover background.
    • The background is shown below:

    The changes I made:
    1. I opened the crack photograph into a separate Photoshop document.
    2. I changed the filter into black and white so that my magazine features would still be visible.
    3. Then I used the smudge tool to blend the background so that the photographs original location was not visible.
    4. The distorted smudge effect also compliments the main coverlines narrative as the character Dan suffers from personal issues like anger management and aggression.
    5. The crack photograoh only covers one side of the magazine so then I rotated the edited cracked glass photograph and placed that layer on the other side of the magazine. Then I expanded the image until the background was covered.
    6. The two background images looked like they were pieced together so I linked the layers and used the blur tool to blur certain areas.
    7. Then I lowered the backgrounds opacity.
    8. I decided to get rid of the box that goes behind the main coverline.
    9. The last change was to move the parts of the "pug," being the barcode and the magazines URL.

Research and planning: language used for film review/award wreath advertisment

The feature will be applied to the film poster.

  • Considering the film will be regulated by the BBFC, I have mainly looked at film festivals in the UK.
      • The maximum number of wreath film/ award I will use is 3.
      • They are normally positioned in the upper or lower tier of the film poster.
      • I have also considered the World's top short film festivals as the social realism genre conventionally has a niche audience and falls under the independent productions.
      • Using conventions, I have looked into a list of the world's top short film festivals so that I can include institutions that already exist.
      • Considering the film will be regulated by the BBFC, I have mainly looked at film festivals in the UK.
      • From looking at the use of language, I have generated these ideas:
      1. "Winner, best in show: Sundance film festival 2016"
      2. "Official selection, The United Kingdom: International film festival."
      3. "Best picture, Raindance Film Festival, 2016"
      4. "Audience Award, Manchester International Film Festival, 2016"

Post-Production: Notice board scene raw footage

      Clip one:

      Clip two:

      • The Mise-en-scene body language and facial expressions compliment the soundtrack/ piano composition as the anger portrayed by the actor is expressed through sound. The reason why we are creating this effect, is to create a link with the narrative. By doing so, we will be able to adhere to social realism trailer conventions as a narrative is told within the trailer.
      • The composition piece that is the piano soundtrack will work as a soundscape which builds on the overall atmosphere of the scene. Therefore, the composition's tempo will apply accelerando (fastened sound) and be slightly louder but still allows the voice over to be heard.
      • The voice over uses a tiresome/ angry tone which creates a sound scape that compliments the mise-en-scene use of body language and facial expressions.
      • The footage background noise will be made inaudible because the main focus is on the voice over and the soundtrack.
      • His body language works with the props to show his aggression. That is why, as a group, we collected leaflets that imply that the main characters suffering from a mental illness.
      • As the actor builds up frustration, the over the shoulder shot is accompanied by a handheld shook camera effect which compliments the soundtrack and the voice over content.

Research and Planning: Film poster collage

      • All are under the social realism genre and apply conventional features:
      • All use a conventional feature of star ratings by review institutions
      • All use bold typography for the film title
      • All include release date
      • Common feature reward acknowledgement
      • Conventional colours and mise-en-scene that builds sceptical and compliments narrative
      • All include steel tong typography- credits
      • All include funding institutions- distribution and exhibition companies
      • Includes actor credits
      • Ideas of body language, facial expressions, cinematography and mise-en-scene portray a sense of characters and the social realism genres narrative and plot

Research and planning: Magazine front cover collages

      • I will draw inspiration from the following magazine front covers.
      • Ideas will adhere or subvert the social realism genre
      • The collage includes independent and conglomerate magazines.
      • The conglomerate magazine like "Empire" generates ideas such as the magazine front cover ideas forming around the headlined/ main images film narrative.
      • "Cosmopolis" uses colours that draw on connotations that compliment the headline film/ main images film narrative.
      • "Total Film" use of coverlines typography and layout will be a feature I adhere to/ consider in my own front cover construction.
      •  "Film Maker" main image uses mise-en-scene of a simplistic nature but presents a sense of narrative through connotations of facial expressions and body language.
      • "American cinematographer" uses a conventional independent magazine front cover approach with the use of the focal point being the main image and lack of coverlines. I will adhere to presenting a sense of narrative through mise-en-scene on my magazine front cover but I will subvert conventions by using vast amounts of coverlines.
      • The positioning of coverlines will vary with typography size and positioning as has been done in "SFX" magazine.
      • Most mastheads include a bold typography which helps audience navigation so I have included that feature.
      • Main image manipulation will be used to present a sense of character which has been done in "Go film social magazine" as an example presented on the collage. The idea behind doing so, advertises the film correctly which allows audiences to decide on whether the film appeals to them.

Research and planning: Booking the theatre

I have e-mailed the performing arts teacher who is in charge of the college's theatre so that me and my group can use the theatre's facility.

Post-Production: Magazine process four: magazine front cover

      • The first change I made was on the background. I opened a new Photoshop document up and placed two cracked screen images. One was off a cracked screen and the other was of shards of glass. Both overlapped each other but to get them to become one image, I grouped the layers and changed lowered the opacity.
      • The idea behind the background relates to the characters aggressive/ destructive behaviour.
      • I have manipulated the main image by adding a shadow onto my models face. The idea behind the shadow is to advertise a sense of narrative through secret connotations but also character personality. How this was done, was by double clicking the layer and selecting the option that allows the shadow effect to spread over the image. To select the desired areas, the gradient tool provides multiple options on the direction of the shadow. I also included a faint drop shadow around the main image, in order to refine the image.
      • Due to the change of the background colour, I had to change the colour of the cover line typography. In order to maintain the colour scheme that has connotations to the character and remain conventional of the genre, I changed the typography to white.
      • Using the shape tool, I drew out boxes which signify the next issue/ the next cover line. Using the layers gradient option, I created a faded effect on the rectangles.
      • The box around the pull quote was a solid white shape so all I had to do was change the opacity. I used the rubber tool and changed the brush type to soften the edges.
      • To improve I need to include the pug which is details on the price, website and barcode. I also need to include the issue number for extra information details.
