Research and planning: Understanding sound in trailers

  • I am analysing film trailers to generate ideas that are conventional of social realism branched independent films to understand sound further
  • Voice over builds character- allows the audience to understand what to expect from the film
  • Faint non-diegetic sound in the background to build atmosphere- sound bridge
  • When dialogue is used (through shot reverse shots) non-diegetic sounds are excluded but to retain realism diegetic sound remains
  • Non-diegetic repetative electric piano sound returns to trailer sequence
  • A Non-diegetic score is introduced when the tempo/ atmosphere of the film becomes more light hearted/ cheerier.
  • The trailer switches between dialogue and voice over to show the difference in thought/ speech approaches which develops a sense of character within the trailer that will appeal to primary and secondary audience.
  • At a point, the main character seems to be talking to the audience. The scene involves no setting however, the medium close up and eye line match seems to be directed towards the audience which breaks down the "fourth wall". We may use this idea to develop the sense of character.
